A protest for housing rights in Barcelona's Plaça Catalunya entered its second day on Wednesday 30 September 2026, after spending its first night with around 40 tents installed. Participants confirmed they plan to maintain the encampment until Friday, citing rising numbers and public backing.
The demonstration began on Tuesday and has so far remained peaceful, according to those involved. At around 8am on Wednesday, campers resumed activity, sharing breakfast and preparing for scheduled events. The group held a morning meeting to assign watch shifts and coordinate daily operations.

Arteko, a participant in the encampment and member of several housing collectives, said the decision to continue came from Tuesday night’s assembly. He highlighted unexpected levels of solidarity, adding that the group is calling on organisations such as the Tenants’ Union (Sindicat de Llogateres) to join the mobilisation.
Activities Planned Throughout the Week
The calendar displayed in the central tent lists several events for Wednesday: a commissions assembly at noon, a pink dot workshop at 4pm, an anti-repression workshop at 5:30pm, a jam session at 7pm, and a general assembly at 9pm. That evening meeting will assess the protest's progress and determine next steps.
Elba, a student at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) who travelled from Terra Alta, described the first night as "a bit long and short" but affirmed it went well. She said participants took turns on watch and intend to keep their routines while remaining in the square.
Damià, another participant around 20 years old, said he rents outside Barcelona and spends half his salary on housing. He argued that housing should not be treated as a business but as a basic human right. One aim of the encampment, he said, is to build collective networks and mutual organisation among young people facing similar struggles.
National Context
The Plaça Catalunya action follows a similar housing protest set up last Saturday in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol. Organisers stress that the duration of the Barcelona encampment will depend on ongoing assembly decisions, though current plans remain fixed on continuing until Friday.
