Repairs to tackle long-standing leaks

Barcelona will address persistent flooding in an underground car park beneath Plaça de la Revolució de Setembre de 1868 in the Gràcia district. The city council approved the repair project in September 2026, allocating €626,640 through Barcelona d'Infraestructures Municipals (BIMSA). Water infiltration has affected the car park since 2007, when structural defects caused by surface water seepage were first detected on upper levels. Despite previous mitigation efforts, constant leaks continue to impact key areas, including the roof slab, perimeter wall on Ramon i Cajal street, pedestrian access structures, and spaces under the square’s playground and access ramps.

Work plan and traffic changes

The upcoming works involve demolishing 1,475 square metres of existing pavement in the square and excavating down to the roof slab. A new structural system will be installed, along with a pumping well to collect any future water ingress into the facility. The full project is expected to take six and a half months to complete. During this time, Ramon i Cajal street will be closed to traffic for approximately one month, requiring temporary diversions.

Residents and commuters should expect road disruptions during the initial phase of work, particularly around Ramon i Cajal street.

What this means for locals

The repairs will improve safety and usability of the parking facility, which serves both residents and visitors to central Gràcia. Commuters relying on vehicle access should monitor official updates via Barcelona's 2026 budget portal for exact closure dates. Pedestrian access to the square and surrounding businesses will be maintained throughout the works.
