Two long-running businesses in Barcelona's Gràcia neighbourhood have closed or announced closure as commercial rent costs make trading less viable. Santa Clara bakery shut after its landlord proposed doubling its monthly rent from €1,500 to €3,000, while Camps hardware store is closing after 90 years.
For Gràcia residents, the closures remove established local services from Travessera de Gràcia and Gran de Gràcia. Ara reported that both cases form part of a wider run of closures affecting historic Barcelona businesses.
Santa Clara closed after proposed rent increase
Santa Clara, on the corner of Travessera de Gràcia and Carrer de Quevedo, had served coffee and pastries to local customers for 80 years.
According to Ara, the bakery closed after the landlord sought to raise the rent from €1,500 to €3,000 a month.

The proposed increase was described as the final factor for the nearly century-old shop, which was no longer profitable.
