Expanded Rail Services for Diada de Catalunya
The Generalitat is deploying additional rail capacity across the Barcelona commuter network for the Diada de Catalunya on Friday, 11 September 2026, adding a total of 25,000 extra seats to meet expected demand. Rodalies, the regional commuter rail service operated by Renfe, will provide the additional capacity, with 19,000 of those seats allocated to line R2, which runs between Granollers Centre and Castelldefels. The reinforcement aims to ease congestion and support travel to central Barcelona, where major Diada events are scheduled. Reserve trains and personnel will be on standby to respond to surges in passenger numbers, while enhanced customer service, information and security teams will be deployed at high-traffic stations.
FGC Boosts Frequency and Capacity
Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) will also significantly increase services on its two main lines. On the Barcelona-Vallès line, FGC will add 352 additional train circulations compared to a typical holiday schedule, increasing total services from 707 to 1,059. Between 10:00 and 15:00, train frequency between Plaça Catalunya and both Sabadell and Terrassa will double from three to six trains per hour in each direction. From 15:00 to 21:00, this will rise to ten trains per hour each way. On the Llobregat-Anoia line, FGC will operate on a weekday timetable instead of a holiday one, adding 176 extra circulations for a total of 407. Between Plaça Espanya and Manresa, and Plaça Espanya and Igualada, train frequency will double from one to two per hour between 12:00 and 20:00. Trains on the Barcelona–Manresa and Barcelona–Igualada routes will run with six-carriage formations, doubling their usual capacity of three carriages. Passenger assistance teams will be reinforced, and operational resources will be on alert to manage any unexpected demand spikes.
The enhanced service is designed to ensure reliable and accessible public transport for citizens attending Diada events across the metropolitan area.
As in previous years, FGC will illuminate the vaulted ceilings of Plaça Catalunya station in the colours of the Catalan flag. The station, one of the city’s busiest transport hubs, sees over 90,000 daily users.
