Second Power Supply to Boost Reliability
Adif has put out to tender works worth €2.02 million to reinforce the electrical infrastructure serving the access tunnels to Barcelona Sants station. The project, which will last 13 months, aims to install a second power supply point within the existing system of five transformer substations, ensuring service continuity in the event of a failure in the main supply.
Work Includes Flood Prevention Measures
According to a statement issued on Tuesday 27th October 2026, the works will also involve relocating part of the electrical cabins, installing new equipment, and carrying out conditioning and drainage improvements to protect the transformer substations from potential flooding.
The reinforcement will guarantee service even in the event of a main supply failure.
The investment forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise critical rail infrastructure at one of Spain’s busiest rail hubs. Barcelona Sants serves both high-speed AVE trains and regional Rodalies services, making uninterrupted power essential for daily commuter and long-distance travel. Further details on the tender are available via Adif's official project page.
