Adif and Renfe have suspended improvement works at Castelldefels station indefinitely, citing operational reasons linked to an upcoming strike by train drivers. The decision, announced on Friday 23 October 2026, affects a project originally scheduled to begin its first phase on Saturday 31 October.
The suspension interrupts a planned alternative transport arrangement that would have supported passengers during the disruption. According to a joint statement from both organisations, the action follows a strike called by the Semaf union for Thursday 29 October, which is expected to affect services on the R2Sur line despite minimum services being maintained.
Once resumed, the works will be carried out in two phases. The first will require halting rail traffic between Garraf and Gavà stations, while the second will impact the stretch between Vilanova i la Geltrú and Gavà. These improvements are part of a wider infrastructure upgrade across a 23-kilometre section of the Rodalies de Barcelona network, with an estimated investment of €23.4 million.
Works include the renewal of 87,000 metres of rail and approximately 60,000 sleepers to enhance track geometry, durability and safety. The upgrades aim to improve travel efficiency and reduce future maintenance needs.
Passengers are advised to monitor updates via Renfe's official website and rodalies.gencat.cat for real-time service alterations, particularly given ongoing works between Sitges and Garraf that may affect journey times.
What this means for commuters
Travellers on the R2Sur line should expect potential disruptions around the strike date of 29 October, even though regular works at Castelldefels are now on hold. The original plan to suspend train services between key stations has been paused, meaning no immediate changes to train operations will take place this weekend.
However, temporary speed restrictions remain in place on sections between Sitges and Garraf due to separate ongoing maintenance, which could lead to longer journey times. No new start date has been set for the Castelldefels works, with both Adif and Renfe stating they will announce resumption plans “until further notice”.
