The cost of a funeral in Barcelona can range from €2,900 to €6,000, according to an analysis by betevé. Josep Ventura, CEO of Áltima, one of three licensed funeral providers in the city, said rising personalisation is driving up expenses.
The three companies are Mémora, which operates five of the city’s eight funeral homes; Áltima, active since 1996; and Proxima, which began managing the Sants funeral home in 2024. Mandatory service packages start at €1,926 with Mémora, €1,973.16 with Áltima, and €2,963.80 with Proxima, the latter including cremation and municipal fees.

Cremation through the municipal company Cementiris de Barcelona, SA costs €561.21 without an urn or €706.63 with one. Burial in a niche is €345.60.
ASFUNCAT, the Catalan funeral employers’ association, continues to campaign for a reduced VAT rate. Since 2012, funeral services have been taxed at 21%, the highest in the EU. Only flowers are taxed at 10%.
Almost 70% of the 16,000 people who die annually in Barcelona have death insurance, often taken out decades in advance. Policies now include extras like pet coverage, psychological support, and investment options.
