Eviction Takes Place Amid Protest

A family has been evicted from a property on Carrer Beethoven in the Fondo neighbourhood of Santa Coloma de Gramenet after occupying it for five years. The eviction took place on Wednesday 4th November 2026, affecting Moha, a 65-year-old unemployed man, his wife, and their son Medet. According to reporting by Línia Xarxa and confirmed by ARA, the family had been living in the house since 2021, initially sharing it with another tenant and paying rent. When that tenant left, they attempted to contact the property owner directly but were unable to do so. The house, located at number 90 Carrer Beethoven, is in very poor condition and lacks running water.

They've left us in the street with nothing,

, Medet, son of the evicted couple The Platform of People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) in Santa Coloma de Gramenet intervened in a previous attempt to evict the family two weeks earlier, halting the process temporarily. However, the second eviction was carried out by judicial officers despite a peaceful gathering of around twenty people who tried to negotiate a halt to the proceedings.

Owner Identified as Large Landlord

The PAH has confirmed that the property was purchased by a large landlord who intends to renovate it and rent out individual rooms at what the group describes as "exorbitant" prices. This is consistent with the landlord’s approach to other properties in the area. The family, classified as being in a situation of severe vulnerability, had applied twice for free legal aid but were denied both times. Without legal representation, they were unable to mount a defence. Chicho, spokesperson for PAH Santa Coloma, stated that the court proceeded with the eviction despite the family’s circumstances.

Council Services and Documentation Dispute

Municipal social services, provided through the Equips Bàsics d’Atenció Social (EBAS), are responsible for assessing and supporting vulnerable residents. According to municipal sources cited by Línia Xarxa, the case had been ongoing for years, but social services procedures could not be completed because the family did not provide expired documentation. However, the PAH disputes this, claiming that the family was not offered translations of the required paperwork, which hindered their ability to comply. The EBAS teams, organised by municipal districts, offer social diagnosis, support, and access to municipal aid, including emergency grants and housing assistance. Medet stated that his mother is ill and that the only income in the household came from his father’s sporadic work as a gardener. With their belongings now stored in a storage unit, the family will spend the night in a municipal shelter.
