Electrified cars and SUVs made up 26.15% of new vehicle registrations in Catalonia between January and July 2026, according to figures compiled by automotive industry associations ANFAC, Ganvam and Fecavem. The 22,557 plug-in vehicles registered give prospective car buyers a clear picture of a market where non-plug-in hybrids remain the leading choice.
Overall registrations of cars and SUVs reached 86,256 in the first seven months of the year, 10.2% higher than in the same period of 2025. July itself recorded 12,701 registrations, down 2.3% year on year.
Pure electric registrations rise by 43%
Pure electric vehicles accounted for 12,449 registrations from January to July, a 43.14% increase on the equivalent period last year. Plug-in hybrids recorded 10,108 registrations, up 24.91%.
The figures classify both types as electrified because they can draw power from the electricity grid. Non-plug-in hybrids have an electric motor and an internal-combustion engine but do not plug in, so are counted separately.
- Non-plug-in hybrids: 40,245 registrations, up 19%.
- Petrol vehicles: 17,684 registrations, down 15.2%.
- Diesel vehicles: 1,757 registrations, down 44%.
- Gas-fuelled vehicles: 4,013 registrations, up 8.58%.
Non-plug-in hybrids remain the largest category
Non-plug-in hybrids accounted for almost half of all new cars and SUVs registered in Catalonia during the period. These vehicles, many carrying eco labels, were the most commonly registered powertrain despite the faster growth in pure electric sales.
Across Spain, 749,656 passenger cars and SUVs were registered from January to July, 5.8% more than a year earlier, according to the same industry data.
