Fire breaks out in Sants apartment

A fatal fire occurred this afternoon in a flat on the third floor of number 2 on Carrer de Portbou in Sants-Badal, part of the Sants-Montjuïc district of Barcelona. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 6 PM, with eight units from the Barcelona Fire Department dispatched to the scene. The blaze was declared extinguished at 6:33 PM, according to reports from betevé and confirmed by El Periódico. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Emergency response and transport disruption

Alongside fire crews, personnel from the Emergency Medical System (SEM), the Barcelona Urban Guard, and the Mossos d'Esquadra attended the incident. The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force, have taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire. Due to the incident, traffic was temporarily closed on Carrer de Sants near the scene. This led to disruptions for bus lines D20 and 52, which experienced altered routes or delays.

The death of a 95-year-old man in a residential fire is a tragic reminder of the vulnerability of elderly residents during domestic emergencies.

Residents in the area were briefly affected by the emergency response, though no further casualties have been reported. The identity of the man has not been officially released, pending notification of next of kin.
