€100 million investment secures long-term logistics base
The Valencian consumer cooperative Consum will invest €100 million to construct a 50,000 square metre logistics platform dedicated to fresh, refrigerated and frozen products in Barcelona’s Zona Franca industrial estate. The facility will strengthen its supply chain across Catalonia. Consum has signed an agreement with the Consorci de la Zona Franca and glass manufacturer Vidriería Rovira to take over the lease of an 80,000 square metre plot previously occupied by the old Damm bottle factory. The cooperative will hold the land for 30 years, with the option to extend up to 50.
Construction and job creation timeline
Work to adapt the site for logistics use is scheduled to begin at the end of 2027. If plans proceed as expected, the facility will become operational by the end of 2029. During the first five years of operation, Consum will create 150 new jobs. Priority in hiring will be given to workers from Vidriería Rovira, according to the company’s announcement.
Expanding Catalan distribution network
This new platform consolidates Consum’s growing presence in Catalonia, where it currently operates two logistics centres: one of 42,000 m² in Zona Franca and another of 11,800 m² in El Prat de Llobregat. These facilities currently supply all of Consum’s stores in the region. The expansion supports a broader growth strategy. In the current fiscal year, Consum plans to open seven new owned stores, including locations in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Viladecans, Terrassa (two), Badia del Vallés, Balaguer (Lleida) and the Abaceria Central market in Barcelona. It will also launch 13 new Charter franchises.
