Virtual Reality Aids Patient Comfort
Hospital Clínic Barcelona has launched the SERENA-MENT project, using immersive virtual reality headsets to help patients manage pain and anxiety during nursing care. The initiative, led by nursing staff, provides patients with calming visual environments during procedures, particularly complex wound dressings, to promote cognitive distraction and improve overall care experience. The project is already in use in the General and Digestive Surgery unit, where around twenty patients have so far used the technology. Two virtual reality headsets have been acquired using a €5,000 prize from the Campus Clínic Innova 2025 programme, under its 'Millorem el Clínic' category, which recognises innovations that improve patient care and hospital processes.
Approved for Clinical Evaluation
The Ethics Committee for Drug Research (CEIm) has approved SERENA-MENT for a new phase involving data collection to assess its impact on patient well-being, pain levels, and anxiety. This step will allow for a rigorous evaluation of the non-pharmacological intervention, which complements standard treatments. Patricia Vilares Marrondo, nursing coordinator in the General and Digestive Surgery unit and project lead, said:
"We wanted to find new ways to support patients during moments that often cause pain or distress. In this regard, technology can help us offer more humane and person-centered care."
Part of Broader Innovation Strategy
The SERENA-MENT project aligns with the NUCLI 2025 Strategic Plan, which aims to make Hospital Clínic more accessible, sustainable, and intelligent through pioneering solutions. The 'Millorem el Clínic' programme, part of the wider Campus Clínic Innova 2025 initiative, supports staff-driven improvements with tangible benefits for patients, professionals, or resources. The project reflects growing scientific evidence supporting virtual reality as a tool in healthcare settings.
