The Catalan government has confirmed the processing of battery storage projects with a combined capacity of 2,400 megawatts, marking a major step in regional energy resilience and decarbonisation. The announcement coincided with the opening of Battery & Energy Storage Tech Europe, a new trade event held at Fira de Barcelona on 8 and 9 September 2026.
Sílvia Paneque, Catalonia’s Minister of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, made the declaration during the inauguration of the event at the Gran Via venue. The projects are part of a broader national push under Spain’s Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation for Renewable Energies, Renewable Hydrogen and Storage (PERTE ERHA), funded through NextGenEU.
While the exact locations and developers of the Catalan projects were not detailed in the announcement, the region is emerging as a central hub for energy innovation. According to Fira de Barcelona, the first edition of Battery & ES Tech Europe brought together more than 100 companies, institutions, and technology centres from across Europe, including support from ACCIÓ, the Generalitat’s agency for business competitiveness, and research bodies such as IREC and Eurecat.
National Context and Funding
Nationally, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco) has approved €156.4 million in aid for 35 standalone electrochemical battery storage projects and ten thermal storage initiatives. Once operational, these will add 690.2 megawatts of power and 2,820 megawatt-hours of storage capacity to the grid.
Catalonia ranks among the regions with multiple approved projects, alongside Asturias, the Canary Islands, and the Basque Country. Miteco’s funding has also supported pumped hydro projects, contributing to a total planned increase of 3,400 megawatt-hours in national storage capacity.
