The Barcelona Municipal Urban Planning Institute (IMU), the City Council body responsible for major urban redevelopment, has launched a €1.9 million tender, including VAT, to prepare land and build the first pedestrian access works for the future Sagrera TAV Metro station in Barcelona.

Residents of Sant Andreu and Sant Martí will see clearance and earthworks between Carrer de Garcilaso and Carrer de Clara Zetkin, followed by work around a station entrance on Garcilaso and an emergency exit towards Pont del Treball Digne. The future station is expected to open in late 2027.

Ten months of preparatory works

The contract documents set an estimated construction period of about 10 months. The IMU plans to finish the work before the last quarter of 2027.

The first phase covers an embankment on the mountain side of the railway corridor, between Garcilaso and Clara Zetkin streets. It will involve nearly 50,000 cubic metres of earthworks, demolition of six disused wells and site clean-up.

Once that stage is complete, contractors will adapt the land around the Garcilaso station access, where stairs and a lift are planned, and the emergency exit near Pont del Treball Digne.

IMU advances funds before landowners reimburse costs

According to the tender documents, the IMU has advanced about €1.6 million from its own funds so the works can proceed before approval of the land readjustment project. The documents state that the cost ultimately belongs to the owners within the redevelopment area, who will reimburse the institute later.

The access works form part of the planned La Sagrera linear park, a proposed 36-hectare green space stretching four kilometres. The project is intended to reconnect Sant Andreu and Sant Martí, districts long divided by railway tracks.

City Council plans for the wider redevelopment also include links between Garcilaso and Pont del Treball Digne, reinforcement of the Espronceda route with Bac de Roda-Felip II, and a connection from Pare Manyanet to Rambla de Prim.

The planned neighbourhood around the station includes 11,347 homes and more than 200,000 square metres of facilities space. The City Council expects it to house more than 25,000 people and support more than 10,000 jobs.
