Barcelona's five municipal music schools have opened pre-registration for the 2026-2027 academic year, offering 672 new places for students across the city. The Municipal Institute of Education of Barcelona (IMEB) manages this process, with applications accepted from Wednesday 29 April until 8 May. This initiative aims to broaden access to musical education for residents of all ages.
The pre-registration period specifically targets new students. Applicants must submit their forms online through the individual school websites. These are readily accessible via the Barcelona City Council education portal. For those encountering difficulties with online submission, the schools will provide in-person assistance. This support is available during their designated secretariat hours.
Councillor for Education, Sara Belbeida, strongly emphasised the city's dedication to cultural access. "Barcelona, as an educating city, makes a very firm commitment to provide citizens with all possible resources," Belbeida stated. "Everyone can access culture and, in this case, musical studies, no matter which neighbourhood they live in." This policy ensures equitable opportunities for residents.
Expanding Musical Opportunities Across Barcelona
The five municipal music schools are EMM Can Fargues, EMM Can Ponsic, EMM Eixample, Joan Manuel Serrat, EMM Nou Barris, and EMM Sant Andreu -Mestre Pich Santasusana. These institutions, with over thirty years of history, currently provide musical training to more than 3,000 students annually. The 672 new places are carefully distributed across various age groups and instrumental specialities. They encompass both comprehensive long-term programmes and engaging annual workshops. The Eixample district, for instance, is home to one of these schools, serving a densely populated area.
The schools offer a diverse range of musical education options. This includes long-term programmes covering different instrumental specialities, musical styles, instrumental groups, and choral singing. Additionally, they run popular workshops designed for babies and their families. Programmes also cater specifically to students over 18 years old, fostering lifelong learning. Long-term programmes typically start for children aged three, four, or five, providing early exposure to music. Adult choral groups for individuals aged 18 and above represent a strong and growing feature of the long-term workshop offerings.
Accessible Application Process and Support
Throughout the academic year, the schools also provide several shorter, focused workshops. These include family music sessions, music for babies, and group instrumental initiation classes. Other options cover listening, movement, and memory skills, alongside practical sessions for drums and percussion. The City Council actively works to make musical education widely accessible across all districts, including Sant Andreu and Nou Barris.
Councillor Belbeida further highlighted the broad appeal and community benefit of these programmes. "Barcelona City Council owns five music schools distributed throughout the city," she explained. "They offer a wide range of musical training accessible for all ages, even for families and their babies." She added that the City Council believes musical training promotes equity, cohesion, and opportunities for all residents.
Community Engagement and Financial Aid
These municipal music centres actively participate in their local communities and events. Belbeida concluded, "These centres are committed to the city and its neighbourhoods. They actively participate in the life and events of their surroundings. They contribute to building a more just, cohesive city with more opportunities for everyone." This strong community engagement ensures the schools remain integral parts of Barcelona's vibrant urban fabric.
After new students formally enrol, the City Council offers public price reductions. These financial bonificaciones can reach 30%, 50%, or 70% of the total fee. The specific discount depends directly on the guardians' declared income. Families must apply for these reductions at the specific school where they have enrolled their child. This system helps ensure that financial barriers do not prevent access to music education.
Key Dates and Waiting Lists for 2026-2027
The Municipal Institute of Education of Barcelona will conduct a lottery on 8 June 2025 at 09:30. This lottery will establish application numbers for tie-breaking situations when awarding places. The results will be promptly published on the municipal music schools' websites. Additionally, interested individuals can apply to join waiting lists. These lists will cover any vacant places that become available throughout the 2026-2027 academic year. Full and updated details on the pre-registration and enrolment process are available on each school's specific web section. This forward-looking approach helps manage demand and ensures maximum participation.
