Barcelona has hosted the first-ever session of joc maonès, a traditional martial art from Menorca, at Casa de Menorca in the city. Around thirty people took part in the June session.
The practice was once close to extinction, but it has seen a strong revival over the past two years. Joc maonès is described as the only martial art with origins in the Catalan Countries, which gives it a clear place in regional heritage.
The art is simple in theory, but harder in practice. That mix of accessibility and technique has helped bring fresh interest to a tradition that had nearly disappeared.
The Barcelona session was designed to share that interest with a wider audience. A reporter from betevé also tried the practice, while attendees gathered at Casa de Menorca, a cultural meeting point for Menorcans living in the city.
Casa de Menorca regularly hosts events linked to Menorcan traditions and heritage. For readers following local culture and community coverage, see our Community and Sport pages for more Barcelona stories.
