Barcelona has launched plans to transform the Sant Jordi Club at the Anella Olímpica, or Olympic Ring, into a 16,500-square-metre live-music venue with a flexible capacity of between 3,500 and 9,000 spectators.

For concertgoers in Barcelona and the wider metropolitan area, the project is intended to add a mid-sized indoor venue for events that are too large for smaller halls but do not require the Palau Sant Jordi. BSM, Barcelona de Serveis Municipals, says the new building will be designed specifically for live music and medium-scale shows, with acoustic, technical and visual quality among its stated priorities.

The project is the first phase of the wider transformation of the Anella Olímpica under the New Montjuïc programme presented by Mayor Jaume Collboni at the start of 2025. Details of the proposal are available on the Palau Sant Jordi project page.

A €70 million project funded by BSM profits

According to BSM's announcement of 14 July 2025, the redevelopment will be selected through an international architecture competition and financed entirely from the municipal company's business profits. The planned investment is €70 million.

“Today we’re kicking off the transformation of the Anella Olímpica,” said Laia Bonet, First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona and chair of BSM.

BSM says the venue is intended to operate at different scales rather than solely at its maximum 9,000-person capacity. Its stated range is:

  • 3,500 spectators for smaller-format events;
  • up to 9,000 spectators for larger live-music shows;
  • 16,500 square metres of total venue space.

Most Anella Olímpica eventgoers are local

BSM said more than 80% of people attending events at the Anella Olímpica in 2024 were local audiences. It recorded 40% from Barcelona and its metropolitan area, while 43% came from elsewhere in Catalonia.

The official announcement describes the new Sant Jordi Club as a venue intended to fill a gap in Barcelona's cultural offer. Residents can check the Palau Sant Jordi website for the published project information and venue news.
