How the Bonus Cultura Works

The Barcelona City Council will launch its new 'Bonus Cultura' on Monday 2 November 2026, providing registered residents with a digital wallet of €20 to spend on cultural activities. This initial credit can be recharged twice more: once between January and April 2027, and again between April and July 2027, allowing each participant to receive up to €60 in total discounts. The funds can be used at bookshops, cinemas, theatres and live music venues across the city. Unlike other local discount schemes, there is no minimum spend requirement when using the bonus. The scheme is open to all residents, not restricted by age, distinguishing it from existing youth-focused initiatives like Cultura Jove.

Eligible Venues and Language Goals

Discounts will apply to physical purchases of books, cinema tickets, theatre performances and concerts. However, major commercial productions, museums and digital content are excluded from the scheme. A key objective of the Bonus Cultura is to promote the use of the Catalan language. The city aims for 70% of all transactions under the scheme to be for content in Catalan, with particular emphasis on books and film screenings.

The plan will specifically seek to attract three major audience segments: those who are not usually part of regular cultural circuits, those who consume culture regularly but could increase their participation, and young people between 18 and 30 years old.

Rollout and Targeted Outreach

To ensure broad access, information about the Bonus Cultura will be distributed through civic centres and street-level outreach in areas identified as having lower cultural engagement or higher risk of digital exclusion, including Besòs, Trinitat Vella and Zona Nord (Nou Barris). The total budget allocated for the scheme is €1.1 million. Of this, €400,000 is reserved for the first phase (2 November 2026 to 10 January 2027), €300,000 for the second (11 January to 25 April 2027), and €400,000 for the final phase (26 April to 31 July 2027). While management costs may be included, the first phase could support discounts for approximately 20,000 residents at €20 each. This investment is less than the €2 million spent on a similar scheme during 2020 and 2021, which was introduced to support the cultural sector during the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

What This Means for You

Residents can expect details on how to register for the Bonus Cultura to be published via the city’s official channels. The scheme officially begins on 2 November 2026. For more information, visit Barcelona Cultura.
