In Barcelona, Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Montjuïc now has a protective pavement system in place until 18 October, as the city prepares the venue for a run of events.
The setup lets the stadium keep hosting concerts and matches while protecting the pitch and athletics track underneath. If you are heading there, check the official venue site before you travel for access details and any timetable changes: Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
According to the municipal contract, Barcelona City Council hired EPS Eventos Spain to install the rented system. The documents say the pavement uses resistant, fireproof aluminium plates that can support up to 40 tonnes, including trucks weighing 12 tonnes per axle, and that it must be level, anti-slip and fitted without gaps.
The same papers say the installation covers 13,000 square metres and includes 600 linear metres of perimeter ramps to remove steps between the existing surface and the new one. The council says it is needed for large-format shows, including events featuring Don Omar, Oques Grasses and The Weeknd, so the stadium can keep operating while the surface below is protected.
The 2026 contract is set to cost €1,532,145 and runs until 18 October, with the option of up to three one-year extensions. For more Barcelona sport coverage, see Sport. For wider city updates, visit Community.
