Shopping Centres Open on August 15 in Barcelona

Many shopping centres across Barcelona and Catalonia will remain open on the Feast of the Assumption, thanks to relaxed trading rules in tourist zones.

Major Centres Open on Assumption Day

Saturday, 15 August 2026, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, is a public holiday across Spain. In Barcelona and much of Catalonia, numerous shopping centres will open despite the holiday, particularly in high-traffic tourist areas. This is possible under the Touristically Highly Congested Areas (ZGAT) framework, approved by the Generalitat in May 2022. Since then, commercial establishments in designated zones can open on Sundays and public holidays from 12:00 to 20:00 between 15 May and 15 September. The policy applies to districts including Ciutat Vella, Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts, Gràcia, and Sant Martí, covering areas such as the Gothic Quarter, El Raval, Barceloneta, and Passeig de Gràcia.

Confirmed Opening Hours

Several major shopping centres have confirmed they will operate on 15 August:

Westfield Glòries: 9:30 AM – 10:00 PM
Diagonal Mar: 9:30 AM – 10:00 PM
La Maquinista: 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Las Arenas: 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
L'Illa Diagonal: 9:30 AM – 9:30 PM

Maremàgnum, located on the waterfront, will open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, consistent with its year-round holiday schedule.

The municipal calendar of commercial openings for 2026 expressly includes Saturday, August 15 as a day of free commercial opening.

Metropolitan and Regional Centres Also Open

Beyond central Barcelona, several suburban and regional centres will open under their usual holiday hours:

Gran Via 2 (L'Hospitalet): open, with leisure facilities operating normally
Màgic Badalona: open
Splau (Cornellà): open
Baricentro (Barberà del Vallès): open
Mataró Parc: open
La Fira de Reus: open during usual hours
Parc Central de Tarragona: open
Espai Gironès: open, with hours listed on its website
Gran Jonquera Outlet & Shopping (Lleida): 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Check Before You Travel

While many centres are open, individual stores or restaurants may choose different hours. Some complexes may only operate leisure and dining areas, not retail. Shoppers are advised to consult the official website of the specific centre or store before visiting. The official portal for Gran Jonquera confirms it opens every Sunday and holiday except 25 December on its website. The change in opening rules was formalised following an agreement in February 2022 between Barcelona City Council, trade associations, and unions, later ratified by the Generalitat.
