AI Expansion Boosts Tech Jobs in Barcelona
Accenture has officially inaugurated its Agentic AI Innovation Hub in Barcelona, marking a major expansion in the city’s artificial intelligence sector. The hub, which has been operational since June 2026, will serve as a collaborative space for businesses, public administrations, academic institutions, and local startups to co-develop agentic AI solutions, autonomous systems designed to automate complex workflows. The company plans to hire 100 additional professionals by April 2027, adding to the 200 already working in the AI division in the Catalan capital. The most sought-after roles include mathematicians, data scientists, AI security specialists, and experts in risk and control management. Accenture’s hub is integrated within its Barcelona Innovation Centre at La Rotonda offices and is already engaged in 20 to 30 active projects. Clients include Banco Sabadell and unnamed public administrations.
Government Backs AI Growth Strategy
The Generalitat de Catalunya has welcomed the initiative as a strategic boost for regional digital development. Albert Tort, Secretary of Telecommunications and Digital Transformation, said the hub strengthens Barcelona’s position as a digital innovation leader in Southern Europe. This endorsement aligns with broader regional efforts to attract deep tech investment. ACCIÓ, the Catalan Agency for Business Competitiveness, has identified AI as a key driver in its 2024 Exponential Leaders programme, supporting 30 disruptive tech initiatives with AI components. Accenture’s move follows its recent selection by Anthropic to establish a team of embedded evaluators for advanced AI model safety, backed by a $1 billion joint investment over five years. According to the Accenture Pulse of Change 2024 Index, 84% of business leaders in Spain are increasing investment in agentic AI. The firm advises 86% of IBEX 35 companies and 78 of Spain’s top 100 corporations, and now aims to extend AI adoption to medium-sized enterprises. While economic projections for the AI agent business were not disclosed, the hub underscores growing confidence in Catalonia’s tech ecosystem. The region has seen rising investment in deep tech, with €112 million raised by Catalan startups by October 2024, supported by public funding mechanisms such as Startup Capital Coinversió and ERDF allocations.
