€98 Million Raised Roundabout to Streamline Southern Port Traffic
The Port of Barcelona Management Board has launched the tender process for a €98 million road junction, the largest road infrastructure project in the port’s history, designed to manage growing traffic in the southern area. The project, approved at today’s board meeting, involves constructing a large raised roundabout over the former mouth of the Llobregat River. This new junction will connect new port accesses with the existing road network, accommodating increased vehicle flows from the expansion of Prat wharf, the future Catalunya wharf, and restructured container operations. Under Spanish procurement rules, the scale of the investment and a planned construction period of three and a half years require approval from the Council of Ministers before the contract can be awarded.
Three-Branch Design with Future Rail Integration
The elevated roundabout will feature three main entrance and exit branches. The first will link to the future port access highway, the second to southern container terminals, and the third to northern terminals on a provisional basis. The final northern connection, planned as an elevated viaduct, will be built after the future pontoon-type mooring point 35B is completed, as that structure will determine available construction space. A key element of the design is compatibility with a major railway complex to be developed in the old riverbed. A large underground service gallery will allow interconnection beneath the junction and support future rail infrastructure.
FCC and COMSA Awarded €111.5M Energy Wharf Berths Contract
In a separate decision also confirmed by the Management Board, FCC and COMSA have been awarded a €111.5 million contract to build three new liquid bulk berths on the east side of the Energy wharf. The works are scheduled for completion in three years and two months. These new berths, similar in design to existing berth 34B, will primarily handle sustainable fuels, supporting the port’s decarbonisation goals and reinforcing its role as an energy hub for southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Once operational, expanded capacity will allow berth 32 on the west side to be repurposed exclusively for chemical and agri-food products. The reorganisation will also create conditions for a new car carrier berth in the inner basin, responding to rising demand for vehicle imports. Works include reinforcing berth 34B with additional mooring points and extending the pit on the east side to ensure proper connection of ship unloading arms.
