Mercat de l’Abaceria is scheduled to move from its temporary tent on Passeig de Sant Joan to Travessera de Gràcia at the end of October 2026. For Gràcia residents and regular shoppers, the relocation will return the market to its original site after eight years operating elsewhere.
El Periódico reported on 17 July that most traders at the temporary market are optimistic about the move, although vendors’ circumstances differ. The report does not give a specific October moving day.
Traders weigh a return to the original site
Mireia Cases, of the Anna i Roger stall, said she was keen to return. Josep Carles, who runs Bartollins, said he expects to retire before the move and will see the renovated market from outside.
“I am really looking forward to going,” Cases said.
Ramon Pons, of J. Pons, expressed less enthusiasm, telling El Periódico that he was returning to the centre of Gràcia because he had to continue working.
A €22.5 million market redevelopment
The Ajuntament de Barcelona, the city council, began construction work on the new market in October 2023. Its official project announcement put the budget at €22.5 million and estimated a 24-month construction period.
The rebuilt market occupies the block bounded by Travessera de Gràcia, Torrijos, Mare de Déu dels Desemparats and Puigmartí streets. The council said the scheme would add about 1,500 square metres of planted public space around the building.
