Beach Season Sees 5.6 Million Visitors
Barcelona's beaches welcomed 5.6 million visitors during the 2026 summer season, according to data released by Barcelona City Council on Sunday 25th October 2026. The figure reflects a significant increase in public use and improved stewardship of shared spaces. Citizens generated half as much waste per person compared to previous years, with an average of 53.4 grams per user collected.
Enhanced Services and Public Order
The bathing support service assisted 30% more people than in 2025, indicating expanded outreach and operational efficiency. Lifeguard and rescue services were active daily from 30 May to 13 September, operating between 10.30 am and 7.30 pm with 54 lifeguards and 22 watchtowers in place. Over 95,000 complaints about uncivil conduct were processed during the season. Of these, 884 related to shared bicycles, primarily concerning improper parking and obstruction of pedestrian pathways.
Environmental and Accessibility Efforts
Cleaning operations were reinforced with nearly 300 additional seasonal staff deployed across the city, including beach zones. Volunteers from the City Police also conducted underwater clean-ups, retrieving 500 kg of submerged waste along the coastline. An assisted bathing service operated at four locations, Barceloneta, Nova Icària, Bogatell, and the Fòrum bathing area, to support people with reduced mobility, in line with ongoing accessibility improvements.
