Xavier Trias will take the final place on Junts’ candidate list for the Barcelona mayoralty, according to Jordi Martí Galbis, the party’s mayoral candidate and its leader at Barcelona City Council.
For Barcelona voters, the decision puts a former mayor and Junts’ most successful recent municipal candidate visibly back into the party’s campaign. Trias led the most-voted list in the 2023 city election, although Jaume Collboni ultimately became mayor.
Martí Galbis told Tot Barcelona that he had proposed the role after raising the possibility in an interview in September, and that Trias had accepted. He said Trias would be closely involved in the campaign.
“Trias is someone I care about and he was the best mayor the city has had, along with Pasqual Maragall, and he will be available to the candidacy.”
Trias led Barcelona’s vote in 2023
According to Barcelona City Council’s official 2023 election results, Trias per BCN-CM won 149,235 votes, or 22.42%, and secured 11 of the 41 seats on the council. The PSC list led by Collboni received 131,735 votes and 10 seats.
The current council term runs from 2023 to 2027. Junts’ decision to give Trias a place on the ticket signals that Martí Galbis intends to use his predecessor’s record and name recognition as the party seeks to convert its 2023 result into control of the mayoralty.
Speaking on betevé’s Bon dia programme on Thursday 15 October, Trias also urged Junts supporters not to be unsettled by opinion polls showing support for Aliança Catalana in Barcelona. He said Junts should “stick to our own path and be patient”.
