Junts per Catalunya will not support Pedro Sánchez’s re-election as prime minister after Spain’s general election on 29 November, the party’s secretary-general Jordi Turull said on Wednesday.

For Catalan voters, the position means Junts is ruling out providing Sánchez with its backing in a possible post-election investiture vote, where Spain’s Congress of Deputies chooses a prime minister. Turull said Junts had been left "very badly burned" by Sánchez’s government during the current parliamentary term.

“We will not invest Pedro Sánchez because we have been burned by this person, very badly burned.”

Turull cites the Brussels Agreement

Speaking to TV3, as reported by Europa Press, Turull referred to the Brussels Agreement, a political agreement Junts says it signed with Spain’s Socialist Party during the current legislature.

He said Junts had viewed the agreement as a “historic opportunity”, but accused the government of delaying or failing to meet its commitments. Turull said the party had sought a confidence vote from Sánchez after concluding that those commitments had not been fulfilled.

Turull acknowledged that Sánchez had delivered the Amnesty Law, but said Junts regarded that measure as part of the exchange for its support in the earlier investiture vote, rather than a commitment covering the whole legislature.

  • Election date: 29 November 2026.
  • Junts’ stated position: no support for Sánchez in a subsequent investiture vote.
  • Reason given by Turull: Junts says commitments linked to the Brussels Agreement were not fulfilled.
