Barcelona’s Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) has named Valentí Roma as its new director, bringing him back to the institution where he previously worked as chief curator.

Roma, born in Ripollet in 1970, previously led La Virreina Centre de la Imatge for nearly a decade. The General Council of MACBA ratified his appointment after a public competition committee unanimously chose him from 21 candidates. The jury said his project was strong and praised his professional background.

He worked at MACBA between 2013 and 2015 as chief curator. He left that role after a controversy linked to an artwork about King Juan Carlos I. This appointment marks a new stage for the Barcelona museum.

MACBA is in the Raval neighbourhood, close to Plaça dels Àngels, where the museum has planned expansion work. Roma will also be expected to strengthen the museum’s international profile and its place in contemporary art.
