Floristería Soriano, at Avinguda Gaudí 6 near the Sagrada Família, has announced that it will close after almost 80 years, according to reporting published by El Periódico on 4 June 2026. The closure would remove a florist that has supplied residents with bouquets and plants for family occasions, balconies and homes since 1946.

The family business is on the lower, heavily visited stretch of Avinguda Gaudí. Its owners say that pressure from tourism and a dispute with Barcelona City Council, the Ajuntament, over the shopfront have made continuing unviable.

“They’re forcing us to close,” the business said in reporting by Ara on the municipal requirement to remove the storefront.

A window installed in 1973 is at the centre of the dispute

According to Ara, the dispute concerns a small glass display window installed in 1973 which projects about 30 centimetres from the façade. The window was permitted when it was built, but ceased to comply with later changes to Barcelona’s urban-landscape rules in the late 1990s.

The report said the florist was not told of the issue until early 2024, when the City Council inspected businesses around Avinguda Gaudí and nearby streets as part of action against unauthorised signs, lighting and other commercial displays aimed at visitors.

El Periódico described Soriano as a neighbourhood shop rather than a tourist business, despite its location close to the basilica. The report said its trade did not depend on day visitors, although tourists used its pavement display as a backdrop for photographs of the Sagrada Família.

Xavier Soriano is the current heir to the family business, while his partner Houria works in the shop. The reported closure means local customers will lose a long-standing nearby supplier of flowers and plants on Avinguda Gaudí.
