Residents in central Barcelona have experienced a full month in which temperatures did not fall below 24C at any time of day, according to data from the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat), Catalonia's meteorological service.
The run began after the night of 19 June, when the Barcelona - el Raval station recorded 23.6C. For residents of the densely built-up Raval area, the figures mean there was no cooler overnight period below 24C during the following month.
The station, which has operated since October 2006, had not previously recorded a consecutive month above that threshold, according to the reported Meteocat data.
Warm nights concentrated in the city centre
Since 15 July, temperatures at the Raval station have remained above 26C. Every night there since 13 June has been a tropical night, defined as one with a minimum temperature above 20C.
- Half of the nights from the start of June to 19 July were torrid nights, with minimum temperatures above 25C.
- More than half of days from the start of June recorded maximum temperatures above 30C.
- The highest temperature was 38.3C on 8 July, during the summer's second heatwave.
- That night also produced the year's highest minimum temperature, 28.6C.
Conditions varied across Barcelona. At Zona Universitària, the highest overnight minimum recorded was 25.6C, and temperatures had remained above 24C since 7 July.
At the Fabra Observatory on Tibidabo, in the Collserola range, minimum temperatures were between 22C and 24C on most days over the same month. The contrast with the Raval records illustrates the stronger night-time heat in the city's more densely urbanised areas.
