The Poble-sec Residents’ Association has launched a civic-behaviour campaign with Barcelona’s Sants-Montjuïc district on Carrer de Piquer and Carrer de la Bòbila, asking people to keep the recently renovated streets clean.
For residents of the two streets, the campaign addresses daily complaints including litter, dog fouling, discarded bulky items, street urination and night-time noise. The association said it wants the improvements made to the public space to last for as long as possible.
“We wanted to take advantage of this moment to try to keep the street in this new condition for as long as possible and to raise awareness among the whole neighbourhood so that it looks after public space, which belongs to everyone,” said Sergi Gàzquez, president of the Poble-sec Residents’ Association.
Seven poster messages on street use
The campaign slogan translates as “New street, keep it clean”. Its posters are displayed along both roads and cover seven forms of behaviour that the association says affect the area.
- Picking up dog waste.
- Respecting neighbours’ rest at night.
- Using litter bins properly.
- Putting out bulky waste on the correct collection day.
- Not urinating in the street.
- Using scooters and bicycles properly.
- Keeping scooters and bicycles off the newly improved pavements.
Gàzquez said most people behave considerately, but that the actions of those who drop litter, make noise at night or leave bulky waste out on the wrong day are more visible.
He described the initiative as a campaign “from neighbours to neighbours”, rather than an instruction imposed by an institution. People using Carrer de Piquer and Carrer de la Bòbila are being asked to follow the messages on the posters and keep shared spaces clean.
