Polish discount chain Pepco has opened its largest store in Catalonia at 48 Pelai street in central Barcelona, just steps from Plaça de Catalunya. The 800-square-metre shop spans two floors and marks a strategic shift for the retailer, which previously focused on shopping centres and peripheral retail parks.
The new location replaces Stradivarius, which had occupied the space for over two decades before departing, according to property portal Idealista. Its arrival signals a broader commercial shift on Pelai, a key shopping artery undergoing renovation.
This is one of our most ambitious openings in Catalonia, in an area that sees thousands of residents, workers and visitors daily.
Central Push in Spanish Expansion
Pepco, founded in Poznań in the late 1990s and part of the Pepco Group, entered Spain in January 2021 and now operates over 240 stores nationwide, employing more than 2,000 people. In Catalonia, it previously had 26 locations, including sites at Westfield Glòries, Les Arenes, Diagonal Mar and SOM Multiespai.
The Pelai store increases its presence in Barcelona’s city centre, where it now has five stores. The move aligns with a wider strategy to establish visibility in prime urban zones and compete directly with other major low-cost retailers such as Primark.
What the Store Offers
- Fashion for all family members
- Home goods and textiles
- Decorative items and toys
- Everyday essentials at low prices
The store is now fully operational, making it accessible to residents returning from holidays and visitors exploring central Barcelona. Its opening was confirmed in April 2026 and was widely reported by local media following announcements via the company’s social channels.
