National Police have arrested a man at Barcelona's Estació del Nord who was sought by French authorities over an alleged homicide in Paris. The arrest followed an identification check after officers saw the man behaving evasively at the station.
For passengers using Estació del Nord, the man was taken into custody at the bus station after officers found an outstanding European arrest warrant issued by France. Police said he attempted to flee several times during the identification process.
French authorities described the suspect as a "very dangerous" person.
According to the French investigation cited by National Police, the man is suspected of fatally stabbing his French flatmate in Paris before leaving France for Spain.
Spanish courts will handle the surrender procedure
The detainee was placed at the disposal of the Spanish judicial authorities. He will remain available to the courts while the procedure for surrendering him to France is processed.
Under Spain's Act 3/2003 on the European Arrest Warrant, Spanish judicial authorities are responsible for executing warrants issued by other European Union member states. The law replaced traditional extradition procedures with a judicial surrender system based on mutual recognition.
If surrendered, the man will answer before French authorities in connection with the Paris homicide investigation.
