Italian tourist in critical condition after attack

Nicola Maggiotto, a 21-year-old from Asolo, Italy, is in induced coma in the intensive care unit at Hospital del Mar following a group assault on 12 August. The attack occurred near the Sea Sea Beach club in the Port del Fòrum area of Sant Adrià de Besòs, close to a taxi stop, according to reports from El Periódico and Telecinco. Maggiotto was on holiday with eight friends when, after leaving the beach club, a confrontation escalated with another group. Witnesses said the initial interaction was friendly, but turned aggressive when Maggiotto and a 19-year-old friend lagged behind the group.

He was hit from behind in the neck and collapsed. Then they kicked and punched him while he was on the ground.

The regional police force, Mossos d'Esquadra, confirmed they were alerted around 22:25 and that the Badalona police station has taken charge of the investigation. The attackers, described as a large group speaking Spanish, fled before officers arrived.

Family arrives, files formal complaint

Maggiotto’s parents, Daniele and his wife, travelled to Barcelona immediately after learning of the assault and have filed a formal complaint with the Mossos. According to ANSA, cited by La Vanguardia, the young man suffered severe brain injuries and remains in critical but stable condition. His friend, who tried to intervene, sustained a laceration to the eyebrow requiring stitches but was discharged hours later. No robbery occurred, as the victims’ belongings were not taken.

Mossos investigators have interviewed witnesses and are reviewing security camera footage from the area. The motive remains unclear, though early accounts suggest the incident followed verbal threats from the opposing group. Residents and visitors in the Fòrum area are advised to remain vigilant, especially late at night. For updates on the investigation, the public can refer to the official Mossos d'Esquadra website.
