Jaume Giró, the former Economy Minister of the Generalitat, has resigned from Junts, the Catalan pro-independence party led by Carles Puigdemont. The party confirmed his departure to El País, after reports that Giró had told Puigdemont of his decision days earlier.

For Junts members and voters, the resignation removes a former minister associated with the party's more pragmatic wing. Giró had already stepped down from the party executive and given up his seat in the Parlament, Catalonia's legislature, in September 2025.

Disagreements over Junts' political strategy

Giró's departure follows a long-running disagreement with Junts' leadership over the party's political direction. He had opposed Junts leaving Pere Aragonès's coalition government with ERC in October 2022, when he was running the Economy Ministry.

When he resigned his parliamentary seat and party leadership post in 2025, Giró said the party's current direction did not match his view of the politics that Catalonia needed.

“The current orientations of the party do not coincide with my way of understanding the politics that I believe the country needs today.”

Reporting by El País said Giró had favoured exploring agreements with the PSC, the Catalan Socialist Party, where necessary. The approach conflicts with the position of Junts' national leadership, headed by Puigdemont and secretary-general Jordi Turull.

Junts sources said Campdepadrós, a lawyer and former Tarragona candidate, wanted to close his political chapter.
