Key Structural Milestone Reached
Today, workers installed the circular end platform of the Pont del Petroli in Badalona, marking one of the final major structural phases of its reconstruction. The platform, with an external diameter of 13 metres and an internal opening of 4.20 metres, was placed using a pontoon and now rests on 11 steel piles driven approximately 12 metres into the seabed. This new design, developed with input from the Maritime Engineering Laboratory (LIM) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), features inclined surfaces to improve hydrodynamics and better withstand wave impacts during storms. The structure's resilience was tested through physical modelling at UPC, informed by studies into the effects of Storm Gloria in January 2020, which severely damaged the original pier.
Completion Targeted by Year-End
Second Deputy Mayor Daniel Gràcia observed the installation and confirmed that remaining tasks include fitting the railing, lighting, and wooden decking. While rain could delay work on the wood and electrical components, the project remains on schedule for completion by the end of 2026.
The absolute majority given by residents has allowed us to unblock the repair after six years of waiting, without political obstacles,
said Badalona Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol, who visited the site earlier this month. The €4,082,786.64 project is co-financed by the Badalona City Council and the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB).
Next Steps and Public Access
Once the final platform is secured and finishing work completed, the iconic walkway will be reopened to the public. The council aims to restore full access before the year concludes, weather permitting. Further updates will be published via the Badalona City Council website.
