Incident on Avinguda Diagonal at 8am
A woman was injured on Monday 19th October 2026 after being struck by a bus on Avinguda Diagonal in Barcelona. The collision occurred around 8am at Plaça Pío XII when a driver of the L51 bus route, operated by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), attempted to avoid a pedestrian who was crossing the road. The bus, travelling from Sant Feliu de Llobregat to Barcelona, swerved to avoid the woman, reducing the force of impact. Although she was hit, her injuries were not serious. The driver's evasive action caused the vehicle to crash into a tram barrier, shattering one of its windows. No passengers were injured.
Drivers Say Lights Were Green, Pedestrians Crossing Illegally
According to AMB officials, the bus driver reported that the traffic light for vehicles was green at the time. However, several pedestrians attempted to cross the avenue without right of way. The driver, who was new to the L51 route, took evasive action upon seeing the woman step into the road. Emergency medical personnel from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) attended to the woman at the scene. Both Mossos d'Esquadra and Guardia Urbana responded to secure the area and begin an investigation.
The local police have taken charge of the investigation to clarify what happened and determine whether the driver passed on a green light, as stated, or if there was a traffic violation.
The incident disrupted morning traffic at one of the city's major entry points. Authorities are reviewing evidence to establish fault and whether any safety measures need reinforcement at the crossing. Further details have not yet been released.
