Crane Truck Hits Overhead Sign
A crane truck caused significant disruption on Tuesday 13 October at the junction linking the N-II and B-20 roads in Montgat, in the Maresme region of Barcelona province. Just before 15:30, the vehicle, exiting a roundabout onto the highway access lane, failed to lower its hydraulic boom fully. The extended arm struck an overhead traffic sign directing lanes to Barcelona and Mataró. The impact sheared the sign in half and snapped its ground anchors. The truck became entangled in the metal structure, tilting onto its right-side wheels and blocking the roadway.
Driver Uninjured, Emergency Crews Respond
The driver managed to exit the vehicle unharmed. However, the wreckage of the sign and the immobilised truck blocked the junction completely, prompting an emergency response. Two units from the Bombers de la Generalitat (Catalan fire and rescue service) and multiple patrols from the Mossos d'Esquadra (regional police) attended the scene. Initial attempts to stabilise the vehicle were unsuccessful.
A tow truck was required to clear the debris and remove the crane truck, leading to an extended closure.
Traffic Disruption on Key Routes
The closure of the N-II to B-20 link caused significant traffic jams. Congestion built up on the B-20 towards the coast and on the N-II in the direction of Barcelona during the afternoon and early evening. The incident was reported and verified by El Caso (El Nacional) on 13 October 2026, with emergency service involvement confirmed through the Generalitat's public safety documentation repository.
