Barcelona has handed over the keys to 64 new public rental homes in Trinitat Nova, in Nou Barris, as the city continues to expand its housing stock.

The handover took place on Thursday afternoon at Plaça del Centre de Vida Comunitària 4-8. Mayor Jaume Collboni attended, along with Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez and Nou Barris councillor Xavier Marcé.

The 64 homes add to a total of 162 public homes delivered in Nou Barris during the current municipal term. Across Barcelona, the City Council says it has delivered 2,201 public homes in the same period. Collboni said projects like Trinitat Nova show how housing has been placed at the centre of municipal policy to help residents stay in their neighbourhoods and in the city.

The wider development has 95 homes in total. Of these, 20 are social rental homes and 44 are affordable rental homes, allocated to people on the Barcelona Official Protected Housing Applicants Register (RSHPOB). The remaining 30 homes are for urban rehousing needs, and one flat will be assigned through the emergency housing table.

The 44 affordable rental homes have one, two or three bedrooms. Fifteen are reserved for local residents, 13 for people under 35, four for single-parent families and two for families needing adapted housing. The 20 social rental homes, which have two or three bedrooms, include five for local residents, three for people in social accommodation resources, six for under-35s, two for single-parent families and two for families needing adapted housing.

The building was promoted by the Institut Municipal d'Habitatge (IMHAB) and designed by ESTUDIO ALVAREZ-SALA, SLP and MIPMARI ARQUITECTURA I DISSENY, SLP (UTE). It includes one to four bedrooms, one or two bathrooms, a living-dining room, kitchen, laundry area and terraces. The design includes rooftop pergolas with photovoltaic panels, high insulation, solar protection and cross-ventilation, while the semi-underground car park avoids mechanical ventilation systems. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda is funding the development.

This project adds to another public housing scheme in Nou Barris at Carrer de Palamós, 70. Together, the two developments provide 162 homes. The City Council plans to start construction on 142 more homes in Trinitat Nova in 2026, and says two further developments are due to begin soon. The municipal government aims to deliver 3,000 keys by the end of the current term and raise the public housing stock to 15,000 homes by 2027.
