Locally Crafted Edible Souvenirs Pay Tribute to Gaudí

Barcelona has unveiled a premium line of souvenir chocolates inspired by the architectural masterpieces of Antoni Gaudí. Developed by innovation studio Makeat and crafted by Lluc Crusellas, named best chocolatier in the world in 2022, the collection aims to elevate the city's souvenir offerings beyond mass-produced trinkets.

The Gaudeat brand features nine handcrafted chocolates, each replicating recognisable elements from Gaudí’s work: the dragon from Park Güell, the star of the Sagrada Família, and the cross from Casa Batlló. The team used 3D prototyping to ensure precise detail, working with external manufacturers to produce exact molds while avoiding any designs restricted by copyright.

We had to be faithful and careful because Barcelona is a city of design and culture, which deserves that quality.

Víctor Echeverría, co-founder of Makeat, stressed the importance of authenticity and quality in representing the city. The project involved close collaboration with the Gaudí Council, which endorsed the concept as a culturally respectful tribute that enhances public engagement with the architect’s legacy.

Technology Meets Tradition in Packaging

Each chocolate box includes a QR code linked to educational content about the monument it represents, offering buyers insight into Gaudí’s creative process. The initiative also supports heritage preservation, with 1% of profits directed toward restoring Gaudí’s buildings.

The chocolates are already available for pre-sale at Terminal 1 of Barcelona–El Prat Airport. Initial retail locations will include Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, La Roca Village, El Corte Inglés, and the city’s cruise terminal. Prices start at approximately €29 per box, set by individual retailers.

  • Launch event: 15 September at Casa Batlló
  • Ingredients highlight Mediterranean flavours – cocoa, nuts, lemon, cinnamon
  • Future plans include nougat variants and seasonal products like Easter 'monas'
  • International rollout planned for US and Japanese markets by 2028

The product launch aligns with growing global interest in Barcelona’s architectural heritage, spurred by factors including the upcoming Year of Architecture and anticipation around Gaudí’s potential beatification. The team also sees local demand, aiming to delight residents with future festive editions.
