The Barcelona City Council is in negotiations with Sareb, the state-owned asset management company, to buy the plot housing the self-managed Àgora Juan Andrés Benítez in Raval, in an effort to halt an eviction scheduled for October 8.

Officials from the Ciutat Vella district confirmed that the council has formally expressed its intention to acquire the land “for community uses” and has requested a postponement of the eviction. The space, occupied since 2014 by local residents in memory of Juan Andrés Benítez, serves as a vital social hub in the neighbourhood, offering shelter, meals, and cultural events, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Sareb, which reactivated eviction proceedings in April, has not yet responded to the council’s offer. According to activists, the entity is awaiting specific details before making a decision. Despite ongoing talks, the plot was listed on real estate portals twice in recent months at 4.2 million euros, described as an “investment opportunity” with potential for 32 apartments, 27 parking spaces, and commercial units, plans that contradict community demands.

The objective is to ensure a social use for the space, whether through affordable housing or continued community management.

City Council sources say discussions are ongoing, with a follow-up meeting pending. District councillor Albert Batlle previously stated the city seeks a “social use” for the site, in line with past acquisitions such as Casa Orsola and Vallcarca housing blocks.

The Àgora was established in 2014, one year after Benítez, a 50-year-old businessman, died following a violent confrontation with Mossos d'Esquadra officers on Aurora Street. According to an autopsy reported by EL PAÍS, Benítez suffered multiple facial and cranial traumas, which triggered a fatal heart attack exacerbated by pre-existing arrhythmia and stress. Eight officers were suspended and investigated for possible homicide and torture, though the origin of the fatal blows was never conclusively determined.

The upcoming eviction date coincides with the 12th anniversary of the occupation and the 13th anniversary of Benítez’s death. In response, activists are maintaining a resistance campaign, including a protest march set for Saturday at 6 p.m. in Raval, featuring a concert by rumba group Aravilo and performances by DJs Missex, Yasmina Karrum, Cheba Nao, and Mbodj + TNTC.
