First AI-Managed Study Room Underway
The Badalona City Council will begin renovation work next week on a new municipal study room in Plaça de Júlia Minguell, in the Coll i Pujol neighbourhood. The 400 m² facility, located on the ground floor of a 2021-built building, will be the city’s first study space to operate with automated access and artificial intelligence, allowing for unstaffed operation during opening hours. The project has a budget of €548,609.01 including VAT, approved under the municipal budget modification of 27 March 2026. Works will completely reconfigure the interior to create a large open-plan study area, a reservable multi-purpose room, a relaxation zone with vending machines, and service areas including restrooms and technical equipment.
With this new room, we are not only expanding the city's offering of study spaces, but we are also incorporating a flexible scheduling system that will adapt to users' needs and allow for 24-hour opening during exam periods.
Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol made the statement during a visit to the site on Friday, 25 September 2026, underscoring that the initiative responds to long-standing demand from students for adequate study environments.
24-Hour Access via Digital Credentials
The facility will normally be open 12 hours a day, from 9:00 to 21:00, but will extend to 24-hour operation during exam periods. This will be made possible by a digital access control system managed remotely. Users must register via a dedicated website or mobile app (available for iOS and Android) to receive a personal digital credential. Access will be granted through QR codes, digital keys, or NFC technology. The system will monitor capacity in real time and ensure security without on-site staff. The multi-purpose room can be reserved in advance through the app or digital platform, with automatic access enabled during booked slots.
Accessibility and Remote Monitoring
The renovation includes installation of a 23 cm technical floor to eliminate uneven surfaces and improve accessibility, a new main entrance and emergency door, and glazed openings to maximise natural light. The space will be fully accessible and equipped with Wi-Fi for all users. A permanent technological supervision system will allow remote monitoring of operations, incident detection, and direct connection to the Local Police if needed, ensuring the secure and reliable function of all systems.
