The Guàrdia Urbana of Barcelona has arrested a suspect accused of igniting 18 fires that burned 127 waste containers across the Sant Gervasi and Pedralbes neighbourhoods between 6 May and 5 August 2026. The arrest was made on Sunday by the force’s Investigation Unit, with support from local district community policing teams.
Barcelona City Council estimates the damage caused by the arson attacks at approximately €115,000. In addition to the destroyed containers, flames damaged 11 vehicles, the protected cobblestone pavement of Monastery Square and the boundary wall of Escola Sant Marc.
Gas Supply Cut Off After School Pipe Damaged
In one incident, fire affected a gas pipe at Escola Abat Oliba Loreto, forcing a two-day suspension of gas supply to the educational facility. The disruption occurred during the academic term, though no injuries were reported.

The coordinated probe combined surveillance data, witness accounts and forensic evidence collected from multiple fire scenes. Authorities confirmed the suspect acted alone and targeted residential streets in upper-class districts known for their quiet environment and historic infrastructure.
No motive has been publicly disclosed, and the suspect remains in custody pending further legal proceedings. Residents are advised to report unattended suspicious activity near waste collection points via the official city press service.
