Weekend Travel Peaks on Friday and Saturday

The Servei Català de Trànsit (Catalan Traffic Service) estimates that 523,000 vehicles had left the Barcelona metropolitan area by 15:00 on Saturday 10 October 2026, as part of the long-weekend exodus tied to the national holiday on Monday 12 October. The peak travel times for departures were Friday afternoon between 14:00 and 20:00, and Saturday morning from 10:00 to 14:00, according to official projections. The figures are slightly below the initial forecast of 570,000 outbound vehicles made by the agency earlier in the week.

Return Traffic Expected Monday Afternoon

The return journey is expected to concentrate on Monday, with around 270,000 vehicles forecast to re-enter the metropolitan area between 12:00 and 24:00. The heaviest congestion is likely between 16:30 and 20:30. The full traffic operation, coordinated with the Mossos d'Esquadra traffic division, began at 12:00 on Friday 9 October and will run until 24:00 on Monday 12 October.

  • Additional lanes activated on the AP-7 motorway
  • Truck movement restrictions in place on key routes
  • Over 1,080 police checks deployed across Catalonia
The main goal is to ensure smooth mobility and minimise disruptions during both outbound and return flows.

Drivers are urged to check real-time traffic conditions via the official traffic incidents portal before travelling, particularly due to lingering road impacts from recent heavy rainfall across parts of the regional network.

Travel Advice for Motorists

The Servei Català de Trànsit advises drivers to:

  • Plan routes in advance using the traffic status website
  • Allow extra travel time during peak hours
  • Heed temporary truck restrictions on motorways
  • Stay informed about weather-related incidents

Increased travel is directed toward inland and mountain areas, coinciding with the start of mushroom season and hiking activity, though coastal destinations remain popular.
