The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) has formally asked the Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police force, to prevent far-right speaker Vito Quiles from accessing the Bellaterra campus on Monday 19 October 2026. The request follows Quiles' social media announcement of an event at the university as part of a national tour, despite the institution confirming it has not received or approved any such application.

The university's refusal is based on concerns over public order, citing disturbances during a similar unauthorised event by Quiles on the same campus one year ago. On that occasion, anti-fascist protests escalated, requiring riot police intervention to maintain control. A recent event by Quiles in Pamplona this Thursday also sparked unrest, reinforcing institutional concerns.

We are committed to preserving campus safety and academic integrity, and will not authorise events that risk inciting confrontation.

The UAB stated it did not grant permission for any gathering involving Quiles and reiterated that unauthorised events will not be tolerated. The Mossos have confirmed they have received the university's request and are assessing how to proceed under public safety protocols.

Student Groups Mobilise Against Visit

Several student and anti-fascist organisations, including the Plataforma Antifeixista de la UAB, the Organització Juvenil Socialista (OJS), and the Sindicat d'Estudiants dels Països Catalans (SEPC), have issued calls to “physically oppose” Quiles' presence if he attempts to enter the campus.

University officials emphasised that their primary duty is to ensure the safety of students and staff, particularly in light of past incidents linked to extremist speakers. The Security and Surveillance Service at UAB, reachable at 93 581 2525, remains on high alert ahead of Monday’s potential gathering.
