Shelter Restored After Equity Complaint

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has reinstated protective facilities at the D50 bus stop in Plaça de Catalunya, ending a situation where regular passengers were left exposed to sun and rain while a nearby tourist bus stop retained its shelter. The change follows a resolution by the Barcelona Ombudsman, David Bondia, who described the previous arrangement as "an unfair situation" and called for urgent action to restore accessibility and comfort for local users.

Vulnerable Groups at Risk

Bondia's intervention came after a complaint from a local neighbourhood association highlighted the impact on vulnerable commuters, including pregnant women, people with disabilities or reduced mobility, and older residents. In his ruling, he stressed that waiting conditions are part of the right to mobility, not just the vehicles themselves. "When we talk about the right to mobility in public transport, we shouldn't just talk about vehicles and the metro, but also about platforms and shelters," Bondia told TOT Barcelona. "Now, the right to transport is guaranteed even while waiting."

Having accessible seating and climate protection elements at bus stops is not just a matter of comfort, but also of equity, public health, and the effective guarantee of the right to mobility.

Commuters Left Unprotected in Heat

The Ombudsman noted that during summer months, D50 and night bus users had to wait standing, without shade or seating. He emphasized that bus stops are "an essential part" of the public transport network and that authorities must ensure safety, accessibility, and comfort. The original shelter was displaced due to temporary bus stop relocations in Plaça de Catalunya, reportedly linked to pavement works. While tourist buses occupied a covered stop, local service users were left without equivalent protection.

Residents Can Report Issues via TMB Portal

TMB invites residents to submit feedback or report issues through its official complaints and suggestions portal, where concerns about service conditions can be formally registered.
