Schools Affected by Torrential Rain

Heavy rainfall on Tuesday 29 September 2026 has disrupted operations at 29 schools in Barcelona, according to the Education Consortium. The incidents, concentrated in various districts, involved water leaks, flooding, and electrical hazards, with repair teams deployed throughout the day to address damages.

Most affected centres remained open, but several required temporary relocations of students and adjusted schedules. Technicians worked through the day to resolve issues, with officials expecting all schools to resume normal activities by Wednesday.

Flooding at Escola Mossèn Jacint Verdaguer

One of the most severely affected schools was Escola Mossèn Jacint Verdaguer in the Poble-sec neighbourhood, where multiple classrooms flooded. Images shared with betevé by the Intersindical union showed standing water in classrooms, forcing staff to reorganise lunch shifts and allow early pick-up from 1:30 PM.

Parents were informed promptly and advised to collect their children early if needed.

Damage at Institut Montserrat Roig

Institut Montserrat Roig, located in Camp d’en Grassot i Gràcia Nova, also suffered significant water damage. The school’s gymnasium flooded, and water emerged from electrical outlets, leading to the closure of several classrooms. Corridors and common areas were also inundated, according to the institute’s Parents’ Association (AFA).

Impact on Nursery and Music Schools

The rain also affected 32 municipal nursery schools and music education centres. While most continued operations, at least one nursery advised parents to collect children early due to structural damage. Water accumulation was reported in basements and ground-floor facilities across multiple sites.

The Education Consortium confirmed that all incidents are being managed and that no injuries have been reported. Families are being kept informed through school communications channels.
