Barcelona's beloved open-air cinema series, Sala Montjuïc, returns to the historic Montjuïc Castle for 16 nights of films and live music this summer. The popular event starts on 10 July and runs until 5 August, offering residents and visitors a unique cultural experience.
The MODIband Cultural Association, which first launched the initiative in 2003, organises the programme. Each evening features a concert at 20:45, followed by the main film screening at 22:00. Attendees can also enjoy a range of food and drink options while taking in panoramic city views.
Tickets are available online, priced at 9 euros without a deckchair or 12 euros with one. A 0.50 euro booking fee applies to all purchases. Youth Card holders receive a 1 euro discount on either ticket type.
Summer Nights at Montjuïc Castle
The series opens on Friday, 10 July, with a screening of 'Flowers for Antonio'. The programme includes several acclaimed films, such as 'Sundays', 'Sirat', and 'One Battle After Another'. Other notable titles include 'Marty Supreme', 'Hamnet', 'Three Goodbyes', 'Bugonia', 'Fargo', 'The Grace', 'Thelma & Louise', 'The Secret Agent', 'The Sinners', 'Sentimental Value', and 'The Royal Tenenbaums'. The final night, Wednesday, 5 August, will feature a surprise film.
Montjuïc Castle provides an ideal setting for the open-air cinema. Its high location offers refreshing mountain breezes and a quiet atmosphere, away from the city's usual summer bustle. The castle's historical murals also add to the unique ambiance.
A Popular Barcelona Tradition
Open-air cinema has become a cherished summer tradition in Barcelona, with many venues across the city. Sala Montjuïc at the castle remains the most well-known and attended. The concept, inspired by similar successful events in Paris, offers a relaxed evening activity for locals and tourists alike.
The combination of films, pre-show concerts, and dining options makes it a full evening out. For example, the opening night features a rumba show, while the screening of 'Sirat' will have an electronic music performance. This blend of entertainment helps create a distinct summer atmosphere.
Planning Your Visit
Residents often seek alternatives to crowded beaches and swimming pools during the peak summer months. Sala Montjuïc offers a cultural escape, allowing people to enjoy cinema under the stars. The event caters to a wide audience, from film enthusiasts to those simply looking for a pleasant evening activity.
With tickets already on sale, organisers expect high demand for this popular summer attraction. The Sala Montjuïc series continues to be a highlight of Barcelona's summer cultural calendar, drawing thousands to the iconic Montjuïc Castle each year.
