Barcelona Metro’s L1 will be suspended between La Florida and Plaça de Sants from Friday 17 July until Friday 28 August, affecting an average of 43,000 weekday passengers in July, according to Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB).

For commuters using Torrassa, Santa Eulàlia and Mercat Nou, trains will not run during the closure. TMB says an alternative bus service will cover the affected section, while passengers are advised to use other metro and rail connections where possible.

“These are very important maintenance works, some of them very complex, which require unavoidable closures in order to address them,” said Laia Bonet, Barcelona’s deputy mayor and TMB president.

Track renewal closes three L1 stations

The €11.5 million project includes renewing track and modernising railway equipment at Santa Eulàlia, as well as replacing the switches that provide access to the station’s maintenance facilities.

  • 17 July to 28 August: L1 suspended between La Florida and Plaça de Sants.
  • Closed stations: Torrassa, Santa Eulàlia and Mercat Nou.
  • Expected weekday use affected: 43,000 passengers in July and about 36,000 in August.

Passengers can change to L9 and L10 Sud at Torrassa, or use L5 at Plaça de Sants. TMB has also pointed to L8 services operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, the Catalan government’s railway operator, as an alternative.

Catalunya interchange corridor also closes

The corridor linking L1 and L3 at Catalunya station will be out of service until September for asbestos removal. Passengers transferring between the two lines will need to leave the underground station area and make the transfer at street level.

Elsewhere, Verdaguer station on L4 will be closed from 6 July to 30 August for accessibility works connecting it with L5. Trains will pass through the station without stopping.

Commuters travelling through the affected L1 section should use the alternative bus service or change at Torrassa and Plaça de Sants until the railway service resumes on 28 August.
