Barcelona’s Junts branch has opened its primary to choose the party’s local leader for the 2027 municipal election. Four candidates are standing, and voting is due to begin this Saturday.

The result matters in Barcelona because the winner will shape Junts’ local campaign, council strategy and opposition line in the city. The party says the vote runs until next weekend, with the winner due to be announced on 23 June.

According to Junts and an ABC Catalunya report, the four candidates are Jordi Martí, Pilar Calvo, Glòria Freixa and Jaume Alonso-Cuevillas. Martí currently leads Junts in Barcelona City Council, while Calvo is a member of Congress and chairs Junts’ National Council.

Junts had spent months looking for a replacement after Xavier Trias stepped back from the party’s leadership in the city council. Trias, who was Barcelona’s mayor from 2011 to 2015, returned for the 2023 municipal election, when Junts won the most votes but did not take the mayoralty.

Jaume Collboni of the PSC became mayor with late support from Comuns and the PP. Junts’ internal vote now sets up the party’s next phase in Barcelona, even though the decision is only for its own leadership race.
