€70 Million Plan to Repurpose Sabadell Barracks
The Generalitat will invest €70 million to convert the former Civil Guard barracks in Sabadell into new outpatient facilities for Parc Taulí hospital, officials confirmed this Friday during the first bilateral commission between the regional government and Sabadell City Council. The investment, announced one day after the site’s recovery was confirmed, marks a key step in expanding the Vallès’ reference hospital. Construction is expected to begin in approximately three to four years, once technical procedures such as the functional programme, basic project, and executive project are completed.
From Abandoned Barracks to Public Health Service
The barracks, vacant since the late 1990s and spanning around 9,200 square metres, will house Parc Taulí’s future outpatient consultations. The move aims to relieve daily footfall of around 4,000 users at the main hospital, where inpatients and outpatients currently share facilities. Albert Dalmau, Minister of the Presidency, stated: "We are recovering the barracks because we want a new, expanded Taulí." He highlighted that the project was made possible through collaboration between the Generalitat, Sabadell City Council, and Spain’s Ministry of the Interior. Mayor Marta Farrés welcomed the resolution of a long-standing urban issue, noting the site will transition from a closed, unused space to a vital public healthcare asset. The building was formally reverted to the municipality on 16 September 2026, following a July 2026 decision by the Ministry to declassify the property.
Bilateral Agreements on Fire Station, Roads and Urbanisation
The commission also finalised agreements on other strategic city projects. A new Sabadell fire station will be built with a €9.9 million investment, with construction expected to begin before 2028. For the La Roureda neighbourhood, the Generalitat committed €3.5 million towards pending urbanisation works. The project is set to be drafted and approved in 2027, with construction starting in 2028 and completion by 2029. Mobility improvements were also discussed, including the paving of Onze de Setembre Avenue, which remains under Generalitat ownership. A dedicated commission will address upgrades to the N-150, B-140, and C-1413 roads through Raval d’Amàlia. While the B-40 connection between Sabadell and Terrassa was reaffirmed as a priority, no new funding or construction timeline was announced. Technical studies for environmental authorisation and construction planning are ongoing.
"Today we can say with full force and joy that the barracks belong to the city of Sabadell," said Mayor Marta Farrés, joined by Generalitat President Salvador Illa and Spanish government delegate Carlos Prieto during Thursday’s announcement.
